3-(Trifluoromethyl)cinnamic acid

3-(Trifluoromethyl)cinnamic acid was used in the synthesis of cinacalcet.  It belongs to intermediates category. The 3-(Trifluoromethyl)cinnamic acid molecule consists of 7 Hydrogen atom(s), 10 Carbon atom(s), 2 Oxygen atom(s) and 3 Fluorine atom(s) – a total of 22 atom(s). The exact term of the above molecular weight is "molar mass", which is based on the atomic mass of each element. Molecular weight is actually an older term of "relative molar mass" or "molecular mass" which is a dimensionless quantity equal to the molar mass divided by the molar mass constant defined by 1 g/mol.

Molecular masses are calculated from the standard atomic weights of each nuclide, while molar masses are calculated from the atomic mass of each element. The atomic mass takes into account the isotopic distribution of the element in a given sample.

A process for the preparation of a cinnamic acid ester comprises condensing a benzaldehyde with an acetic acid ester in the presence of a base. The reaction mixture is then treated, without adding an additional solvent or after adding an additional solvent, with an acid to convert a 3-alkoxy-3-phenylpropionic acid ester in the reaction mixture into a corresponding cinnamic acid ester. This procedure allows cinnamic acid ester derivatives of high-purity to be obtained in good yield.
